Fly Tying

I was introduced by a friend of mine using a fly to fish a few months back. At first i really have no confidence in this little thing but was soon impress by my friend's catch. I caught a few too but lost it due to some reel jamming issue (its good to have a reliable equipment). Soon after the catch results i started to tie my own fly. I learn to tie most of the fly from Henry who is from COHO (a fly fishing shop at bali lane). I can say he is a very friendly and helpful guy, u name it he teach it, all the way from the basic. People there in the shop are nice too.

But 1 thing about using fly is that you have to change colour or pattern when fish is not biting, so keep changing and trying. In some of the cases i encounter at certain place is that when lures is not that effective, you may wanna try a fly or vice verca. Therefore, it is good to bring some flys along. Below are some of the flys i learned.

water was cold, current strong (size 15 still fly kite) most catch rays, others include grouper, sweet lips, teeboon, shark.

fight was good. nice experience. tackle all ok but rod find it too soft, fighting power not there. time too look for stiffer rod. Des and i even for now. the whole night we kena only 2 sotong. and most of the rays (6 - 7 pcs) were caught using the cut up of these 2 sotongs. think of it, quite worth it. mine was caught on tamban, it took and went on to the high way..... chut sua! haha nice trip nice kaki.

was a wet start, rained heavily in the morning, but sun cam out in the afternoon. the catch was scattered, not all caught in a spot. boat man (ricky) changed a few spots. prawns used was of nice size, and healthy.

i would like to plan for a trip in june taking this Ricky's boat.

i have already check the tide and current. slow moving current so no need big weights and evening high tide. came out with the following date and i would like to do a poll on dates of ppl who can make it in JUNE.

day started off by meet the guys at market for breakfast. then drove of to boarding place. the place if behind a abattoir at jalan buroh. boarded the boat from beach. ha, the method of classic. we board a small boat, then boat man pull rope to te big boat. when we come back is the opposite. feels like crossing some river in china.

anyway started fishing, water was clean and deep. place is full of small groupers and small fish. boat man not bad, changes spot when place no big fish. aroun late afternoon, sizeable fish was caught. include 1 big grouper. 1 fellow angler, used a duel brand sotong jig, and caught 1 grouper and 1 parrot. i can consider zero fighter for big fish. i contributed most of the small groupers taken in the picture. many small grouper were also release back.

nice place. recommended to go.

current was good. small weight.

some oil refinery, water is good. amazingly water is clean despite all the heavy industrial areas. water dept is much deeper than changi

boat was big and spacious. can load about 10 anglers with comfort, out trip consist of 7 anglers if i not wrong. there are rod holders all around the boat. got "sick bay" and ktv on board. cost $400 think exclude bait.

03.01.09 at southern island on Ah Suay boat

The day itself is quite windy and fine. A good day for a fishing trip. Was excited cos is the first few boats to choing the sea. Actually is still consider mosoon period but who cares. Jus having mosoon wind and the wave is ok, not tat rocky but super super cold cos the mosoon wind haven die down.

So as per normal dock off at 6pm from west coast pier to our distination, southern island. About 15 to 30 min we reach our first spot. To catch our live bait sotong. didnt fish cos was hardworking on our bait. Cos no bait no fish. So caught enough and we move off to the second spot. Also catch sotong but half way the boatman say is a good current below so a few of us including mi drop our line down. HAHAHA nt a while i up a grouper 800gram. But too bad after awhile no action liao so we move on to another spot. This spot best cos where the action of those biggie begin.

All was relaxing the mosoon wind and i too was relaxing. Then suddenly my rod there was tis pull tat till nw i wont forget. My rod bend like siao and my reel jus went screeming. Then i stunt for awhile before start fighting the fish. My kaki help mi put on the fighting belt and one help mi set the drag. Was so drama sia. Then i jus pump it up man. Pump till the fish die cos nt i die is the fish. About 10min the fish is up and is a prata weighing 8kg plus. Wow break my record but tis is not the record of the day. More coming up sia.

So after tat i re tie my line and put down the line. I jus leave my rod there and went to slack. After awhile i go reel in and a grouper is up again. aorund the same size as the first grouper. Then rebait it and drop the line. Tis time more firece. It jus auddenly went off like siao sia. Keep on pumping and pumping. Can feel tat tis time more heavy and strong then my first ray of the day. it took 15min to pump it up.And when it surface all was shock. It is a gao tun weighing 20kg. The head big sia and the mouth when open full u can put ur head really in. lol. Shagg out liao tat day.

After so many comotion, and after the gao the action die down again. So went to another spot as cal the ang chor spot. When reach i fish awhile cant get i sleep liao. Was resting until a kaki wake mi up saying big chor is here faster. Then i went out and saw a really big chor weighing 5kg plus. I faster go drop my line and fish and wait but so sad cant get one. But ok liao fight so many biggie liao shagg le.

So total catch is 01 guhood, 01 gerama, 01 prata ray, 02 bat fish, 03 ang chor, 03 grouper and many many sotong all big size. A fruitfull trip i can say ya...... Below are some pic enjoy.

fish was a good fighter, strong it ran out about 3 times, each time taking some drag, but fight lasted less than 5 mins.fish was brought up. there were other fishes caught but no pictures, a number of small groupers.

picture was taken after reaching the jetty, fish was kept in ice box, so that explains the curve body of the fish.

trip was organised by my bro in law, christopher. been to the river for a few times. my record was a 4.2kg kim ba lor. anway day started out to be nice. water condition was good (green and not brown) as it was not raining the past few days. most of the kims was caught in the morning. weather in the late morning was very hot and we were all casting under the scotching sun. we did not erect the canopy as it will definately hinder our casting.

after lunch, the weather started to turn bad, sound of thunder and skies turing dark did not have any bites. motor of the boat gave trouble too, cooling pump not working well, so we have to travel slowly to prevent over heating of the motor. well travelling slow is still better than a spoilt motor, dun wanna get stranded out at sea... then we were caught under light showers, so everyone put on wet weather attire, erect the canopy. then fishing method change to parking cause cannot cast due to canopy. rain spoilt the water condition, water turn murky so we decided to head back early.

on the way back, we passed by a kelong, and saw people up-ping ang kueys, thus rosman (boatman) fast hand, fast leg, went to the location and join in the feeding frenzy. seriously it was lok chiat lok chiat. ang keuys fed on dead, and tiger gaos on live prawn. put down and strike. we hang around there till the storm was full blown, after that we had no more bites. total catch 6 ang kueys, 5 tiger groupers, 1 small stingray (CNR-ed) at the spot.

weather was quite bad, and with our faulty boat, we cannot make it across the channel fast enough, and it can be dangerous also. therefore we had to hide behind a floating house and wait for the storm to simmer down before we continue our journey. we head back after the storm... armies of mosquitos waited for us at the jetty, due to behind schedule, instead of bathing, we just changed into dry clothes and got the hell out of there. we head to get some DVDs and dinner. about 10+ we head back home.

Suppose we r heading for southern island on this trip but end up the boatman k siao act blur & bring us to johore shore.Somemore he can say he dun know we wanna go southern island.B4 2 weeks,b4 the day of this trip & b4 1/2 hrs heading to his boat,jordan already remind him tat we r going to southern island but jus dun understand why he bringing us to johore shore without telling us.Somemore si bei k siao & act blur.Anyway we r already in his boat so bo pian lan lan & bear with it.He brought us to this 1st spot where we catch lots of kuning for bait,est about 20 pieces.Everyone was enjoying fishing cos its a Surecatch fishing.Jus put ur tamban hook down & u will sure kana at least 1 kuning.After a moment of enjoyment we headed to 2nd spot.All the while we have nothing & i mean zero catch from about 5pm till 7pm.All of us waited patiently & at this moment Desmond reel back his line.Suddenly he found out that his reel keep screeming away plus line keep dashing out...He shouted WAH!!!CHU SHUAN...He immediately pump & fight with this fish.After about 5 to 10mins the fish get reel back.Everyone was so excited when they saw the big leopard ray on the surface of the sea.Boatman came & gaff up the ray & desmond is like sitting on 1 corner relaxing after a big fight on this ray.After Desmond catch all the way till 11pm its like no bite at all.Boatman shift to another spot which is nearby & some of the members kana few AhSeng & was released back.Wei kana 1 small ray & was quickly release into the live well as Jordan wanna bring it back & rear it on his marine tank.We wait & wait till morning as boatman promise to bring us to his so call grouper spot but end up nothing being caught.Benjamin caught a sea KBL & Mugen(double hook up)b4 we end this trip.Overall comment on this trip is bad cos 1st-boatman conned us tis trip which is going southern but end up in J shore.2nd-His spot is where u will catch lots lots of BIG AHSENG.3rd-He told us no need buy live prawn,only bring some glass dead prawn will do but end up when on board he told us y nv buy live prawn.Heng we have 1kg of kelong sotong & few grams of dead grey prawn for standby if not the whole night we all can sleep on the boat le.4th-He never try his best to find spot 4 us but jus park his boat there & do nothing.Somemore he can sleep soundly in the middle of the night.

Haiiiii....think tat the 1st & last trip wif tis boatman.

Was a raining sunday.As per normal didnt expect much in singpaore water and some more due to the rain. So reach loyang @ 0800hrs and departed from there. Six anglers altogether including mi. Bait of the day is live prawn. So went to our first spot nothing much but one of our angler hook up a ang cho kee after tat went to the second spot and every action and moment all happen here. For mi i didnt felt excited at first but when reach the spot we saw the boat man garmin meter show a huge like christmas tree under. The boat man told us he never seen tis before at tis area and the christmas tree like shape is moving so we all suspected is a group of fish. So drop our line but nothing for mi i sunKo twice. So we adjust our position again at the same spot and try. Tis time is where the action begin. My staff drop the line for less then a second and the line went screeming. Fight a little and there is the 2kg tiger grouper. After the fish is up my line also went and one of the angler too. Its like a feeding frenzy sia. Before noon we already had more then five grouper caught. After the noon time the feeding frenzy is back again. I can only say wow at the time. Its like eva never finish grouper fishing. We lose quite alot of biggie cos they are too fast before we can set the hook rite. And also lose some weight, rangong and line. But can say worth it. Overall catch is 19 tiger grouper, 02 singapore spotted grouper, 02 ang cho kee and 01 guhood. Altogether 24. Man of the match is my staff the most catch of the day(8 tiger grouper) and also the heaviest weight (2kg tiger grouper) lining up second is mi (4 tiger grouper & 1 singapore spotted grouper) also the second in the heaviest weight catogory (1kg plus tiger grouper).

Night Fishing at SECRET spot

Its was a Saturday evening and I'm working mid shift and raffles city. Decided to call desmond while i was working to confirm whether got go fishing. I made my call and sam was on the line, so we conference. After about 15mins we finally decide to go to our secret spot where unfathomable things happen. Haha. Headed home after work and meet them at about 8pm. Once we reach the place, we were appalled, It seems that the road had been covered. However, we managed to find another path and road march begins. Chose our spot, finish setting up, sam threw the first cast followed by desmond. After 5mins or so, both of them caught their fish. WTH!! so fast? So i faster tie my apollo and cast, and finally.. its my turn. Haha. At about 12 plus, we pack up. sam said want to go drink, so we went to a pub. At the pub, desmond and me felt so weird, its like out first time at a ktv pub after long! After which, we ended our day.

Hi guys sorry for late fr. On tat day boarded the boat at west coast pier at 6pm. Depart the dock 15min later. The weather was fine and windy a nice day to fish ya. So the first spot was to net for our life bait sotong. For back up we also have dead sotong jus incase. So will netting for our bait we also fish at the same time using dead sotong. Nt a while one of the kaki Ah Boon first catch of the day Sand Shark. Lol all laugh at him cos he every time joke tat he veri pro.... Whahaha funny guy he is. then came the second catch a grouper. After tat we move spot. The second spot is where i perform liao.... hehehe... went there first catch by mi a Ang Cho Kee. All excited but too bad i the onli one on the boat caught it. Then came my second a Blue Spotted Ray after tat we move on again and tis is where we park our boat till next day. At first was veri sian but gradually u see....... first a few kaki caught sea bass mi too also caught one..... then while at the wee time all was tired and went to rest, suddenly beside my rod came a reel scream. Wow man tat scream wak all of them and came to see. The lne kept on going till its limit then we ask the guy pump now tat is the time. So he pump and pump if nt wrong it went a 100m extimation. then when it get nearer it was a HUGE Hung. It is the leapard ray. Weight around 15 to 20 kg. It was a good fight. after tis scream then is all peace full all the way till we go home. Too bad tat day the water wave current was a bit big so spot wise we cant go any way. But nt bad already total catch is 14 fishes together. Above are some pic enjoy it ya......

Members in this trip:Desmond,Ah Wei,Franky & GF,Sam & Tian Sou.Went over to do our Polo T when we reach Changi V & not long after MotoGP Franky & his GF arrived.After placing our order we proceed to Riverland Tackle Shop to buy our Baits.Tian Sou previously bought himself a 2nd hand Shimano AeroSpin Rod & this time he find himself a Daiwa Surf Casting Spinning Reel to pair up with his rod.This Reel making Desmond wanna have it too cos its much more better than his Surf Spinning Reel he using now.Much more lighter & beautifully design too.
Proceed to the spot & HengHeng let us found some space to settle down there due to many people fishing there too with whole row of rod.While we r preparing our weapon for war all of us kana attack by the evil MOSQITOES.Desmond went around the area to find some newspaper to burn so the smoke can chase the mosqitoes away.Later Sam bring out 1 packet of mosqitoes coil which really save us being suck till dry.Tian Sou was the most happy & KanCheong man cos he can finally cast his new set of rod & reel.Franky keep having line snap & small & big BeeHoon on his Tica reel.After losing many weigh,hooks,line & light,we all can see he is really very frustrated.Whenever he cast,his line will CHU Pattern.Later Desmond went over to help him set his reel turning speed & he try casting again.This time can see him smile & joke again cos the problem of his reel is solve.
We get ZERO catch this trip but most of us treated it like relaxing & chit chat gathering.We pack up & went over to Tampines for our supper at around 4am++.After makan all went home to Lau Sai..Blame the CB chinaman who give us lau sai HUM in our laksa.

Its a saturday nitez fishing at Laborador park. Also tele with the holloween nitez. Weather tat day is good and slight windy. Meet up at ten pm and as per normal leave for changi to buy our bait and accesories. After the top up we leave changi and prepare our long ride to our spot. At first was a some kinda of secret spot but too bad the gate was lock so proceed to the other nearest spot Laborador Park. When reach there, to our surprised it had been renovated as veri long time never went there to fish. So we racky the place again and went to the so called X-File side there and deploy there. Our bait of the day is live prawn due to worms out of stock. So everyone set up their rod so and for after tat we all sit down and relax waiting for our bonus. But after an hour left right one man down. Sam was hit by the smooth wind and the relaxation of the senecry and went fainted. So leave the five of us fighting on. There was bite but no action till the first catch of the day ah wei. Hooked up an octopus. James give an idea to cut the tanticles cos is a veri good bait to fish with and also fresh. As cutting its leg off it wont harm the octopus so des went to cut it and we threw back the leggless octopus safely back.

After the long wee hours, all of us are shagg. No action but gt bite. When we were abt to give up James & Des saw a huge fish swim by the side of us. Supsected is sea bass. so all were charge up again and continue fish till morning 6plus. Due to low tide and hungryness, we all decided to pack up and leave for our breakfast. Before leaving our spot our "friend" the fishes say "yippee" to us as a courtesy of saying good bye and thanks to us for the free bait. Quite piss off but enjoyable fishing trip. So will be back to the same spot as we will be making it our home ground. So stay tune for more update and FR ya...... Cheers....

Fishing At East Coast Six Pipes

Team Members on this trip consist of Me(Desmond),Gibert & Franky.Plan to depart & meet up Franky at ECP 8.00pm but end up late cos of our LATE KING Gibert which make me waited for him till 7.45pm.Reach & meet up Franky at around 8.15pm & as usual have a stick of Ciggy b4 moving to our spot.When we reach there & park our bikes,we noticed there's another group of kakis going to the spot we aiming for too.When they notice us having rod as well as going to the same spot they pick up their speed & rush there.Si bei Kiasu lo~like scare we will overtake them or snatch their gold from the gold mine.Anyway we jus take our time & walk there.We prepare our rods & reels once we settle down on the stone chair there & after a while a group of 2 kakis came.Not long came a group of Big Family.Husband,wife,2 small kids & their ah ma...LoL~The 2 kids si bei playful keep running around KBKP which i believe making the 2 kakis which came after us to leave the place.Franky scare the ah ma when he casting his rod,Whahahaha thinking of the way the ah ma react i wanna laugh again now.His line in his reel get stuck wif ''CAI'' so making his rig going high up & land near the ah ma.Ah ma keep KBKP saying so dangerous & whenever Franky wanna make a cast,she will siam far away from him.LoL~Gibert keep saying those 2 kids r cute cos whenever they saw a catfish they will shout loud saying ''Mao''Yu'' but i think they r disturbing us fishing.
After all this cartoon entertainment it started raining.At 1st drizzling but after about 3mins of small droplets it became heavier & heavier.We have no choice so pack up & hide on a shelter near there.B4 we were at the shelter,there's a couple(franky say they r Jian Fu Yin Fu,cos suspect they having secret affair after overheard their conversation) & a couple of uncle auntie in their late 40.We started smoking after we put all our stuff down & i notice the uncle & auntie saying things bad & doing those irraiting action on us due to our ciggy smoke they have inhaled but we hack care & jus enjoy.After about waiting for 1 to 2 hours for the rain to stop we went back to fish again.After fishing for about 1 hour plus it started raining again & this time even more powerful than previous 1 so we pack up fast & rush to the shelter again.3 of us were shivering & in the end make up our mind & proceed to our bikes & rush to Macdonald to have some hot coffee & burgers.Talk cock till morning 5.30am we decide to went home.What a ''Lang'' ''Pei'' fishing trip we have,kana 3 small catfish & end up with whole body wet.

Fishing at pebble bay - Bad Day?

Should be fishing with Sam & Desmond at Marina after work but as their lines keep getting sangkok and our poor Desmond fell down, we change to pebble bay instead. Desmond broke his rod and scratched his new abu reel. Sam also got a summon on that day. I was also told that my hair is green in colour(cai tao) as i buy a new reel and rod. After a few try out on my new stuff i find that i need to really practice alot. Hmmm no moral to fish after all this things happen. The prawn is still surviving without any bite from the fish after hours. As such we decided to pack off . Hope we will have a more enjoyable trip next time. :)
